Baggage Issues: Delayed, Broken, or Completely Lost
Knowing how to act in the first 30 minutes at the airport is key. Globally regulated under the Montreal Convention, learn what rights exist for your bags.
The law for monetary compensation for your lost bag and clothes is not handled under the famous EU261 Regulation. It is covered globally by the Montreal Convention.
The absolutely crucial first step: The P.I.R Form
Do NOT leave the baggage claim area! Go immediately to the airline's "Lost and Found" desk.
You must explicitly request and fill out a P.I.R (Property Irregularity Report) and keep the copy with the unique PIN. (Without a PIR, your luggage arrived perfectly in the airline's eyes).
Damaged Baggage (Broken wheels, torn fabric)
You have exactly 7 Calendar Days to claim for damage. The airline will either repair the zipper/wheel or replace the suitcase with a new one or cash voucher.
Necessity Expenses while delayed
The Montreal Convention universally states that you must make "mitigating impact purchases" (toiletries, basic clothing). Keep EVERY receipt. The airline will reimburse you retroactively. (Do not buy luxury items, keep it reasonable).
