First Class vs Economy: Does Your Compensation Change?
The surprising rules on how your ticket fare class influences your final compensation yield. Hint: It's different from what you believe.
There's a widespread myth that flying in Business or First Class automatically secures much higher financial compensation under the European Union CE 261 Regulation. The reality is quite specific.
Base Compensation EU 261
The EU regulation is an extremely egalitarian law. The base payouts of €250, €400, or €600 are entirely identical for all passengers, whether you paid €15 for a Low-Cost ticket or €5,000 for a luxury First Class suite. The compensation scales strictly with flight distance.
Downgrading Refunds
This is where your fare class actually matters. If the airline overbooks the flight and bumps you down into a lower cabin (e.g., from Business to Premium Economy or Coach), the law hits airlines where it hurts:
- Flights up to 1,500 km: You are entitled to an immediate refund of 30% of the ticket price.
- Flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km: You are entitled to a 50% refund.
- Flights exceeding 3,500 km: A massive refund of 75% of the ticket cost corresponding specifically to that affected flight segment.
